The Role of the Society

The primary functions of the Society are:

  • To encourage and promote the breeding and improvement of the genetic production potential of Ankole in South Africa
  • To maintain the purity of the Ankole breed in South Africa
  • To promote the interests of the breed in whatever manner possible
  • To encourage the collection, preservation and development of the breed through sound selection in alignment with the breed standards. This includes eliminating contamination by foreign breeds
  • To develop and maintain minimum breed standards (link to breed standards)
  • To keep and maintain accurate records of the pedigrees and particulars of all animals registered with the Society in its herd book
  • To allow competitive showing of animals at agricultural shows as long on their performance testing records are available
  • To safeguard and advance the common interest of breeders in South Africa

The role of each Portfolio and its contribution to members

This portfolio is responsible for:

  • Organising the national auction which provides a platform where members can buy and sell fullblood Ankole, semen and pregnant recipients
  • Promoting understanding and knowledge of the Ankole breed through organising information days to share experiences and information relevant to breeders

This portfolio is responsible for:

  • Building awareness of the Ankole breed through digital platforms
  • Promoting awareness of the Ankole breed through contributing to articles in relevant media productions
  • Engaging with potential and new buyers
  • Securing sponsorships and advertising for the National Auction and Information Day and for the Society as a whole.

This portfolio is responsible for:

  • Preserving the interests of the Society members
  • Developing a framework that guides decision making levels and practices
  • Advise on good governance practices
  • Addressing any legal matters faced by the Society

This portfolio is responsible for:

  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with government
  • Supporting the society to navigate the compliance requirements necessary to meet the requirements of the Animal Improvement Act and improve the Ankole breed

This portfolio is responsible for:

  • Collecting, collating and drafting the Society’s journal
  • Engaging with experts to gather and present information that supports breeders
  • Creating a platform for members to advertise their studs

This portfolio is responsible for:

  • Managing and maintain all the technical aspects of the breed
  • Managing the availability of inspectors
  • Defining and managing inspections and inspection standards
  • Monitoring genetics and supporting diversity
  • Providing advice and informing any decisions that require a technical perspective

The Breed Director is responsible for:

  • Supporting members in their interface with the Agricultural Research Council systems
  • Monitoring and managing compliance with the by-laws in terms of birth registrations, breeding intervals, inspections and DNA submission
  • Acting as the interface between the Society and the Department of Agriculture
